What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a holistic hands-on physical therapy for treating musculo-skeletal (physical) problems of the body such as back and muscle pain. The range and scope of Osteopathy is very broad; including treatment for injuries, repetitive strain or overuse injuries, back pain, joint pain, headaches and much much more.

Some examples of what an Osteopathic treatment might include are; soft and deep tissue massage (the same or similar to what you might get at a massage), joint stretching and exercises (like you might get at a Physiotherapist), and spinal manipulation (similar to Chiropractic).

Your Osteopathic treatment aims to help resolve your current pain or concern, as well as look at the factors that may have contributed to the problem, so that we can work out management and prevention strategies for the future.

What can Osteopathy do for you?

Back pain

You've probably had it, but have you tried Osteopathy to treat it?

Some common forms of Osteopathic treatment for back pain include; soft tissue massage, manipulation of the joints, stretching, and articulation (rhythmic movements of the joints).

Neck pain

Neck pain is often quite closely associated with shoulder pain. A lot of neck pain starts in the shoulders. Over time it is common for it to work its way up into the head and cause headaches or migraines as well.

A wide variety of techniques are available for treating the neck to suit every preference, including soft and gentle movements, massage, stretching, and also manipulation if preferred.

Knee pain

Whether it's ACL damage, arthritis, a sprain or a strain, Osteopathy can help you get back on your feet.

Osteopathic treatment will look at the knee joint and its surrounding muscles, as well as near by joints and the spine (particularly the lower back), which can all play a role in knee problems and pain.

Headaches

Headaches can come in many different varieties, and seem to be all too common these days. Posture, muscle strain, stress and dehydration are just a few of the common culprits.

Book an appointment to see what can be done to help relieve your headache today, and help reduce or prevent them in the future.

Shoulder pain

We see everything from injuries to arthritis. One particularly common complaint is rotator cuff injury. Before having surgery, make sure you get a second opinion. Osteopathy is non-invasive, and can reduce pain and increase movement in the shoulder joint.

It is not uncommon to have a diagnosis of rotator cuff, tendonitis or bursitis, and still have significant muscular pain which can be improved with treatment.

Elbow pain

Elbow pain can be the result of a direct injury, or more commonly from a repetitive strain injury. Often referred to as golfer's elbow or tennis elbow, these injuries are the result of constant strain causing inflammation in the muscle tendons that attach at the elbow.

Treatment typically involves working on reducing the muscle strain that causes the tendonitis.

What to expect when you arrive

When you arrive please park on the street. There is plenty of street parking. The clinic is located up the drive behind the house. Please let me know when you make your appointment if access up the stairs and drive will be an issue. Follow the signs and let yourself into the waiting room. If it is your first time, there will be some paperwork to fill out on the reception counter when you enter.

What to expect from your treatment

Your first session will be approximately 45mins. Paperwork can be filled out electronically prior to your appointment, by clicking the unique link you will be sent when you book your initial appointment. This will help streamline your initial appointment and allow more time for treatment. Subsequent treatments are 30mins.

The aim of the initial paperwork is to achieve a thorough assessment of your entire health, and work out your aims and goals from treatment. You will be asked for further information and details during your consultation, in order to help focus your session on what is most critical to your needs, to improve your health and well-being.

The next step is a physical assessment of your body and specifically the muscles and joints in the area of concern. Adjacent and connected areas are also commonly assessed as they may also be contributing to your problem.

Once you have been assessed, a diagnosis and treatment plan can be made for you, and treatment will begin immediately at your first session. The main area of concern will typically be focused on during your initial session, and if time permits, adjacent/connected areas and/or other concerns will be addressed.

If you are happy with your treatment plan and treatment, you can book follow up sessions (30min appointments) as required. If Osteopathy is not for you, or some part of the treatment or plan is not the right fit, part of your session includes helping guide you to a therapy or therapist that will suit your needs.

Edgeworth Osteopathy is a low volume clinic. You will not be in a crowded waiting room. There is one treatment room, and I am spacing appointments apart wherever possible to maintain social distancing and reduce waiting room interaction. Thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding.

Osteopathy for babies

Cranial Osteopathy is a form of therapy commonly used when treating babies as it is very gentle and non-invasive. The practitioner feels for the rhythms of the body and helps guide them into balance.

Visceral Osteopathy is also a gentle way to treat babies. Treatment involves balancing the tensions in and around the internal organs, such as tightness in the intestines with wind and tummy pain.

It is common for babies to sleep right through treatment, but for some, new and unfamiliar people and surroundings can be distressing. Ideally book an appointment when you know your baby will be asleep. A feed will also help relax your baby if they become distressed with treatment, so try not to arrive with a tummy that is already completely full! Half full is perfect.
